Abstract

The Board of Foreign Parishes was incorporated in 1883 to establish and support Episcopal churches for the purpose of providing a familiar place of worship and ministry for Americans living in or visiting Europe. The Board's influence corresponded to the enthusiasm shown by wealthy American Church lay persons living abroad, the interest of the Anglican Communion in maintaining a presence in Western Europe's cultural and military arenas, and the ability of clergy to elicit financial commitments for a ministry among the English speaking population living in Europe. The Board also acts as a trusteeship for parishes in holding legal title to their property. It acts as both a fiduciary agent and a coordinating business entity for congregations of The Episcopal Church on the European continent. In addition to the Board of Foreign Parishes, Paul’s Church, Rome, and St. James’ Church, Florence maintain separate Boards of Trustees which own the buildings and certain financial endowments for their parishes. Together, the three boards manage endowments for the churches in the convocation.
