Abstract

The General Convention is the bicameral legislature and chief policy making body of The Episcopal Church. Established in 1789 by Article I of the Constitution of The Episcopal Church, it consists of a House of Bishops and a House of Deputies. It is the highest council of the Church that governs the American province of the Anglican Communion, including the United States and several overseas dioceses in Central and South America. The General Convention meets once every three years to consider legislation proposed by bishops, deputies, official interim bodies of General Convention, and dioceses and provinces. This polity and process bears similarity to and draws inspiration from the bicameral legislation of the United States.

Content and structure elements

Scope and content

Materials reflect The Episcopal Church’s relationship with one of the three main organizational sections of the Anglican Communion – the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC). Records include correspondence, memos, delegate reports, meeting minutes, and newsletters. The ACC was formed following a resolution of a second organizational structure of the Communion, the Lambeth Conference, which at its 1968 meeting discerned the need for more frequent and representative contact among the Churches.

Arrangement

This material constitutes Series 2 of the General Convention archive. It is arranged alphabetically.
