Girls Friendly Society. Records

The records of the Girls’ Friendly Society in the United States of America (GFS-USA) provides an impressive historical record of the organization. Minutes and reports of the Board of Directors, Executive Committee, and Coordinating Board, as well as financial ledgers and audits document the organizations governing bodies and fiscal responsibilities. The relationship between the national headquarters of the GFS-USA and local chapters as well as the Department of Christian Education of the Executive Council is also well documented.

In addition, a large collection of publications provides a thorough history regarding the activities and mission of the GFS-USA from as early as 1878.

Board of Foreign Parishes. Records

The Records of the Board of Foreign Parishes are an accumulation of documentation created or collected by officers of the Board and bear the stamp of several Board members, primarily Lindley M. Franklin, Jr., Jeffrey Hill, and Conner Fay. The nearly complete archive includes financial records, minutes, property records, by-laws, charters, estate records, printed material, and insurance records.

Of particular interest in the collection are the business and financial records, notably the correspondence. Other records reflect the administrative involvement of the Board including charters, minutes, estates and real property documents.

The Stines Papers include correspondence, sermons, printed material, legal documents, and photographs that document Fr. Stines' ministerial work building multiracial and black Episcopal parishes, his promotion of racial equality in the South through the Episcopal Society for Cultural and Racial Unity (ESCRU), and issues of racism and sexism in the Episcopal Church. Other personal interests and experience in ministry are also found in the archive.

Episcopal Women’s History Project. Records

The records of the Episcopal Women’s History Project contains interviews and corresponding transcripts conducted with eighteen distinguished Episcopal women along with photographs, printed materials, and correspondence relating to the interviewees. These interviews span 1979 to 1991 with the majority taking place between 1981 and 1986. Additionally, the collection contains a questionnaire and its associated responses and correspondence that was sent to thirty-eight Episcopal women leaders in an attempt to document their experiences in the Church.

Spong, (Rt. Rev.) John Shelby. Project Records

This archive documents the records created by John Shelby Spong as he conducted research for an unfinished biography of former Presiding Bishop John Elbridge Hines, whom Spong admired for his courageous civil rights activism. Included are audio interviews recorded with and about Hines between 1974 and 1975, fifty-three of which have been digitized by the Archives. Research materials related to Spong’s planning and execution of the project, as well as his gathered documentation on the various stages of Hines’ ministry, round out the collection.

This extensive collection documents Everett H. Jones’ service to The Episcopal Church, from his college days to his years as rector of St. Mark’s Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his eventual retirement as the fourth Bishop of West Texas. Included are family papers, travel diaries, sermons, addresses, and course outlines, as well as extensive correspondence with parishioners and church officials.

Provincial Court of Review for Province II in the Matter of the Diocese of Newark v. The Reverend George Gaines Swanson. Records

This collection consists of trial records related to The Diocese of Newark vs George Gaines Swanson, as appealed to the Court of Review of Province II in 1989-1990. The official record on appeal is bound in four volumes, with a table of contents in the first volume. Records in these volumes include the original presentment, related correspondence, motions and court orders, transcripts of court proceedings, exhibits, and the notice of appeal. Notable among the exhibits are correspondence between Swanson and John Shelby Spong, and a transcript of Swanson's version of events leading up to the appeal. Records of the appeal proceedings are unbound and include the Appellant's Brief on Appeal, the Appellant's Reply Brief, the Decision of the Court of Review and a transcript of telephone conversations between Swanson and Denise Haines, the Archdeacon of Urban Ministry for the Diocese of Newark.

General Convention Office. Anglican Consultative Council Records

Materials reflect The Episcopal Church’s relationship with one of the three main organizational sections of the Anglican Communion – the Anglican Consultative Council (ACC). Records include correspondence, memos, delegate reports, meeting minutes, and newsletters. The ACC was formed following a resolution of a second organizational structure of the Communion, the Lambeth Conference, which at its 1968 meeting discerned the need for more frequent and representative contact among the Churches.
